Release Notes

M-Tool is a suite of software tools for programming and configuring Johnson Controls controllers. This version of M-Tool contains Configuration Tools release 8.08 and System Tools release 5.4.2. The Configuration Tools support ASC and DX controllers and related products and the System Tools support Johnson Controls Standard Object based controllers.

The M-Tool package containing Configuration Tools 8.08 and System Tools 5.4.2 is compatible with Windows 98 SE, Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a and Windows 2000 Professional SP2 and may only be installed on those platforms. The M-Tool installation program will run on any of the supported platforms.

Please follow the instructions to install M-Tool.

M-Tool Installation

If M-Tool does not start automatically when the disk is inserted, execute the setup.exe program in the root directory of the disk.

The Configuration Tools installation may be started directly by executing the following file on the CD:

	cd_drive:\CTOOL\cdimage\setup.exe

Prerequisites For System Tools

1. System Tools is not compatible with Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

2. If you are using Windows NT 4.0, you must have the Windows NT Service Pack 4 (or later) installed before installing the System Tools. The System Tools installation program will verify the version and will alert you if an update is required. The Service Pack must be obtained from Microsoft. The update must be performed before the installation can proceed. The update is available from the Microsoft NT workstation web site at:
	http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/

3. If you are using Windows 98, the version of the Windows OLE files may be too old. The installation program will verify the OLE files' version. A version prior to version 4.71 will prevent proper operation of the System Tools components. If an update is required, the installation program will alert you. However, the installation program is not able to install the update since Microsoft does not allow the redistribution of the update. You must obtain the update directly from Microsoft and install it before the System Tools installation may proceed. The update is available from the Microsoft COM web site at:
	www.microsoft.com\com\.

The update package is called DCOM98.EXE.

4. If you are using Windows NT 4.0, the logged in user must have administrator privileges to perform the first install on that particular PC. If there are additional users, the installation must be done for each user to setup the individual user preferences.

5. The Site Book requires RAS (Remote Access Service) when defining dial-up or direct serial connections. The System Tools installation program will verify whether RAS is installed and is the correct version and will alert you if an update is required. On Win98 or WinNT, If RAS is not installed, the Site Book components will still be installed. RAS may be installed or upgraded later without having to re-install the System Tools.

6. The Site Book requires Dial-up networking to be installed before dial-up or serial direct connections can be added to the site database. The System Tools installation program will verify whether Dial-up networking is installed and will alert you if it is not.

7. The communications components require the TCP\IP networking protocol for Ethernet communications. The System Tools installation program will verify whether TCP\IP support is installed and will alert you if it is not.

8. System Tools installs MDAC 2.6 SP1 which will require Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 or later. If an update is required, M-Tool provides Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 in the following directory:
	cd_drive:\SystemTools\Microsoft Updates\IE 55sp1\ie5setup.exe

Prerequisites For Configuration Tools

1. 1. The Configuration Tools 8.08 that are part of M-Tool 5.4.2 package should not be installed on Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. Caution: the Configuration Tools do not support long file names. It is recommended that directory and file names used with the Configuration Tools follow the 8.08 style. Do not use SPACE characters in these file and directory names.

To Run System Tools

The System Tools installation process will create a nested Start Menu Program path of:
	'Johnson Controls - M-Tool - System Tools'.
Entries will be made for all major System Tools components. Run any of the System Tools components by selecting it from the Start Programs menu or by double clicking on its Program Group entry.

Note that System Tools does not include a component that will allow "looking" at the contents of a controller. System Tools interaction with controllers is limited to downloading to or uploading from a controller. Downloading and uploading is done from the Project Builder component. An M3 workstation is required for browsing and interacting with objects on a network.

To Run Configuration Tools

The Configuration Tools installation process will create a Start Menu Program called:
	'Configuration Tools'
Entries will be made for all major Configuration Tools components. Run any of the Configuration Tools by selecting it from the Start Programs menu or by double clicking on its Program Group entry.

If the Configuration Tools were installed prior to the System tools, the subsequent System Tools' installation will have also include the Configuration Tools in the M-Tool Start Menu Program path. The path will be:
	'Johnson Controls - M-Tool - Configuration Tools'
This will be a copy of the existing Configuration Tools program group. Configuration Tools components may be started from either Program Group.

System Tools Re-Installation

If System Tools is installed with a subset of components and then is re-installed without first uninstalling it, the installation process will be additive. In other words, components that were part of the earlier installation will remain and newly selected components will be added. The installation process will not remove previously installed components that are not selected on a subsequent installation.

System Tools UnInstallation

Use the Add/Remove Programs utility in Control Panel to remove Johnson Controls System Tools from your PC. The Uninstall program will not remove the Database directory and its contents. If you want to remove the Database directory, select it in an Explorer window and delete it.

Configuration Tools UnInstallation

The Configuration Tools do not have an uninstall utility. To remove Configuration Tools simply delete the directories in which the Configuration Tools programs are installed.
